Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

This is condition in which the pressure in the arteries is elevated. As a consequence, the heart has to work hard to pump the blood.This strains the heart and blood vessels.
The measurement of blood pressure has components namely systolic and diastolic pressure.
  • Systolic Pressure: Contraction of muscles
  • Diastolic Pressure: Relaxation of muscles
The optimum blood pressure of a normal person is 120/80 mm Hg. 
If the blood pressure ranges from 120/80 mm Hg  to 140/90 mm Hg it is considered prehypertension. If it exceeds this range it is considered as hypertension.

Symptoms Of Hypertenstion:

Headaches, pain in back of the head, dizziness, fatigue, hissing sound in the ear, blurred vision, anxiety, nervousness, confusion,nausea.

Causes:

  • Genetical problem
  • Obesity
  • Bad food habit
  • Stress
  • Environmental Changes
  • Intake of high sodium diet
  • Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol 
  • during pregnancy (gestatational BP)
  • Diabetes
  • side effects of medicines

Effects:

High BP is major factor for stroke, myocardial infection (heart attack), peripheral arterial diseases, chronic kidney diseases, retinopathy which shortens the life expectency.


Remedies:

Natural remedy for high BP:

Drink 10ml of concentrated drumstick leaves juice in the empty stomach. This will help to control the high BP.Instead of drumstick leaves juice take 200 ml of drumstick leaves soup.
Add garlic to your daily diet in the form of chutney, powder and kuzhambu.
Fenugreek, mushrooms, passion fruit, bananas, hyacinth beans (avarakkai), banana stem will also help in reducing the BP and also hibiscus and white lotus taken in a powder form shows better results.

Homeopathic remedy for high BP:

Drug                              : Crataegus Q (mother tincture)
Dosage                          : 5-6 drops in 50 ml of boiled and cooled water; morning and night before food.
Crataegus Q is a homeopathic medicine extracted from hawthorn berry or thorn apple.This will reduce the high BP and it is a good tonic for heart.

Accupressure points for BP:




Points to be pressed                  : H 7, Du 20, P 6, Liv 3
Location of the points:
(Note: Cun is the measurement used in the accupressure to locate the accupressure points in the body. 1 cun is equal to width of the person's thumb.)

  • H 7                : In the groove on the ulnar tip of the wrist crease.
  • Du 20            : The midpoint joining the tips of the ears over the scalp midline. 5 cun behind anterior hairline and 7 cun above posterior hairline.
  • P 6                : 2 cuns distal from the wrist crease between the the tendons.
  • Liv 3             : 2 cuns from the margin of the web between big toe and second toe.

Yoga for high BP:

Shavasana is asana suitable for the reducing high BP.

  • In this asana, you have to lie flat on a yoga mat facing upwards. 
  • Slowly close your eyes and normally inhale and exhale the air.
  • Then relax your body organs by thinking from foot to head one by one.
  • Do this for nearly 15-20 minutes.
  • After this slowly shake your limbs and getup leaning to the left side.

Mudra for high BP:

Suryamudra is the mudra to be done for reducing the high BP.

  • In this mudra, bend your ring finger and touch the bottom of your thumb keeping rest of the straight.
  • This mudra should be done in both the hands.
  • The breathing should be uniform and the head, the neck and the back should be kept straight.
  • This mudra should be done for 8-12 minutes.

Suggestions to reduce high BP:

  • Maintain normal weight.
  • Take low sodium diet.
  • Do excercises for 20-30 minutes regularly.
  • Add more vegetables and fruits in your diet.
  • Feel relaxed all the times.
