Pavalamalli is a popular medicinal plant having lots of medicinal properties used for treating various diseases in Indian system of  alternative medicines like Siddha, Ayurveda, Naturopathy and Home remedies. This herb belongs to the family of oleaceae and native to India, now it is widely distributed in tropical and sub tropical regions of the Asian continent. It is grown as an ornamental plant in the house gardens of Tamil Nadu, India.
This herb is commonly known as night flowering jasmine, coral jasmine  in English , Parijata in Sanskrit and  Kannada, Harsingar in Hindi and Bengali, Parijatakam in Malayalam, Parijathak in Marathi, Pavalamalli or Parijatham in Tamil.
Pavalamalli is a shrub or a small tree which grows up to 10 meters in height with flaky grey bark. The leaves are opposite, simple which are 6 to 21 cm long and 2 to 6.5 cm broad with entire margin. The flowers are fragrant with five to eight lobed white corolla with an orange red center.The flowers lose their brightness during day time. This flower is the official flower of state of west Bengal in India.
The fruit is flat brown heart shaped to round capsule nearly 2 cm in diameter with 2 sections each containing a single seed.

Nutrients present in this plant are alkaloids, ascorbic acid, anthocyanins, beta sitosterol, tannins, tanic acid, flavonoids, etc. It has anti-bacterial,anti -inflammatory, anti-helmentic  and expectorant properties.

The leaves are used to treat arthritis, fever, rheumatism, sciatica, intestinal worms, ring worm,  all types of fever, fungal infection, insect bites, bronchitis, dry cough, anxiety, gastritis, hepatitis, vertigo, diarrhea, gout, gynecological problems, dandruff, lice, hair fall, dysmenorrhoea and anemia.

Directions to use:
  • Take a hand full of pavalamalli leaves, wash it and add 200 ml of water to it, allow it to boil and strain the decoction. Drink this with honey for better results. 
  • Instead, juice of the leaves taken in the ratio 10 ml of juice and with 5 ml of honey can be consumed.
  • While preparing decoction add small amount of ginger and pepper with it to relieve from above mentioned ailments.
