Coriander (Dhaniya)



Coriander is an annual, ancient, aromatic, stimulant and medicinal herb which grows upto 50 cm height. Although its origin is Southern Europe and Middle East Asia, it widely grown and used allover the world. Coriander leaves are mainly used in chutneys, salads, sauces, curries, rasam, sambar and garnishing the food items. From ancient times, this has been used as food and medicine. All parts of this plant is edible but the fresh leaves and the dry seeds are the parts which are mainly used. The fresh leaves are used in many Indian foods, Chinese dishes and Mexican curries. Dried seeds are roasted and then are made into tea, this tea is used to treat stomach problems like blotting, headaches, nausea and cough.

Coriander leaves contain high amount of vitamin A, beta carotene, calcium, potassium and some amount of folate, dietary fiber, magnesium, sodium, vitamin C, E, K, luteine, zeaxanthin and B complex.

  • Because of its antioxidant property, it prevents food spoilage.
  • Coriander leaves are having antibacterial activity against salmonella choleraesuis.
  • Coriander seeds are folk medicine for digestive problem, nausea and vomiting.
  • It increase the insulin secretion and it removes the insulin resist diabetes.

  • Since it has vitamin A, it is good for vision.
  • Vitamin C in this enhances the blood absorption and increases the immunity power.
  • Vitamin K present in this is used for blood coagulation.
