Mullein Flowers

Mullein is a medicinal plant having lot of curative properties and has been used to treat various diseases since ancient times. These plants were first used for lung diseases around 2000 years ago in Rome. Botanical name of this plant is Verbascum thapsus and belongs to the family of Scarephulariaceae.

Common names of this plant are American mullein, candle flower, orange mullein, candle wick, high taper, velvet dock, Adam flower, flannel, blanket leaf, torch wort, etc. Mullein is native to Europe, Asia, Africa and it has been introduced to America and Australia. It is a widely spread weed commonly found everywhere in USA. This plant spreads fast and copiously by producing large number of seeds.

Mullein is drought resistant and grows easily from seed. This plant grows up to 2 meters height. It is a biennial plant, the top portion of the stem develops huge flower spikes with many bright densely cluster yellow flowers which only open for one day. Flowers appear during the month of November to March. It has Silvery green and extremely fuzzy leaves. Leaves, flowers and roots are used to treat many diseases. Fresh mullein leaves are used to prepare homeopathic mother tincture.

It contains Mucilage, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, glycosides, protein, fats, oils and carbohydrates.

Traditionally it was used to treat bruises, burns, hemorrhoids, gout. Leaves have been applied topically to soften and protect the skin.
Mullein oil derived from the yellow flowers are commonly used for earaches, deafness, chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM).

Tea prepared with dehydrated mullein flowers or leaves is medicinally useful and widely recommended for treating coughs and bronchial diseases.

Mullien has several applications and its flowers may be consumed as infusion, tincture as well as syrup to treat numerous diseases.

Mullein oil has analgesic, anti inflammatory, antiseptic, diuretic, relaxant, disinfectant, febrifuge, tranquilizing and expectorant. This oil is blend with the other herbs like basil eucalyptus, garlic and thyme.

Generally it is used to treat anxiety, anger, ear infections, cough, common cold, bronchitis, depression, ear aches, fever, genitals & urinary tract infections, muscle cramps, sinusitis, stress, migraines accompanied by ear oppressing, toothache, whooping cough, pneumonia, etc.

Women should not use this during pregnancy and lactation period.
