MEDICINAL BENEFITS OF MIMUSOPS ELENGI (MAGILA MARAM)
Mimusops elengi, commonly known as Magila maram (மகிழ மரம்) is an important medicinal herb belonging to Sapotaceae family. Its usage as traditional medicine traces back to the beginning of the history of medicine.
It is a medium sized evergreen, wide-spreading tree found in tropical forests of India, South Asia, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, China, Northern Australia, etc.
This tree is very famous for its shade and fragrance. These trees are mainly grown in home gardens and botanical parks. Leaves
are glossy and dark green in color, flowers are star-shaped, creamy white
in color with pleasant fragrance. These flowers are used to make garlands. This is a sacred tree for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains.
Raw fruits are green in color, when it ripens it turns into a yellow to orange color. These eatable fruits are oval shaped, having little flesh with sweetish taste like Sapodilla. Seeds are thick greyish black in color. All parts of this plant are used to cure many diseases in Ayurvedic system of medicine.

Nutrients and Phytochemicals
Nutrients like Vitamin C, potassium, sodium, fiber, fat, protein, quercitol, quercitin, tannins, sapponins, ursolic acid, betulinic acid, taraxerome, lupenol, etc. are present in this plant. The betulinic acid isolated from this bark is proved to be useful in making anti-HIV medicine.
It possesses the properties like anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-carcinogenic and gastro-protective.
The powder of the dried flowers or juice of the fresh flowers are administrated through the nostrils to get relief from chronic headache, sinus headache, allergic rhinitis and Asthma.
We can prepare tea from this flowers by adding milk and honey. Having this once a day will help to treat diarrhea,
intestinal worms, fever, leukorrhea, uterus weakness, fibroids in
uterus, infertility in women and general debility.
The bark decoction and unripened fruits are used to treat bleeding gums, teeth pain, teeth related problems, mouth ulcers, etc.
Infusion of the flower in water will help to strengthen the cardiac muscles, increase the sperm density in men and is used as a general tonic.
Intake of 8 to 10 fruits once a day will give good strength to the body, cure stomachache, gastrointestinal problems, stomach ulcers, increases sperm density, etc.
